Update 9/13

An LGF reader spoke with Dr. Hobbs, Superintendent of Schools, and has some interesting details to add:

Last year, the school system had a problem with the Mexican flag protests, and with gang members using that to hide gang symbols. As a result, one principal banned all flags.

Today, when he became aware of the problem, he lifted the flag ban. That decision will no longer be made at the individual school level.

He has also had a phone call already today from the ACLU! Telling him that if he makes a decison to allow only the US flag, THEY WILL SUE. Didn’t take long, huh?

Dr. Hobbs has informed me that he is currently consulting with the school’s attorneys as to how to respond to the ACLU’s threat.

I have officially changed the world today!

UPDATE 9/12 3:30pm (Click Here For Full Story)

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. – Officials at Hobbton High School have lifted their previous ban on flags.

After the numerous reactions recieved Superintendent Dr. L. Stewart Hobbs, Jr. tells NBC17 they have lifted the ban on all flags and “from this point on, all dress code chages will be made at the school board level.”

This is the older part of the post…

This is just typical. Liberal scumbags have been committing douchbaggery in our school system for too long. I have been waiting to blog this one for a little while because I haven’t been able to find the words. But NBC17 has done it for me. These are the things that go on at our kids schools when they have our kids locked in their classrooms. I have over the last few years been sure to ask my son about the things that his teacher discusses in regards to current events and the such. Here are some examples I have ran into. There is no picture of the President in any classroom in my son’s school. Until a few days ago they were not saying the pledge and during class yesterday there was no discussion of 911. But given that fact that he is my son I do have this story.

We were living in Florida until a few months ago. During one of the last hurricanes, I think “Charlie” the American flag was left out. When my son returned to school where it was hanging from the mast torn and tattered. He walked past it for several weeks and it was never changed. He finally had enough. He walked past it and went directly to the principal’s office and demanded to see her. He told her about the flag and she got on the phone and ordered a new one right in front of him. The V.A. came out and did a flag ceremony and raised the new one and allowed him to hoist it while they saluted him and the band played “God Bless America”. He did this on his own.

But here in SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. they aparently wouldn’t let the kids wear the flag on 9/11. Typical…

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. – On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, students at one high school were not allowed to wear clothes with an American flag.

Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.

The new rule stems from a controversy over students wearing shirts bearing flags of other countries.

Gayle Langston said her daughter, Jessica, was told to remove her stars and stripes t-shirt.

“Today she wanted to wear her shirt, and I had to tell her no,” said Langston. “She didn’t like it at all because I knew it would get her in trouble. Of all days, 9/11, she could not wear her American Flag shirt.”

The superintendent of schools in Sampson County calls the situation unfortunate, but says educators didn’t want to be forced to pick and choose which flags should be permissible.

Nice job Ed, I just linked to your post for the contact info. Thanks.

Globalist twits. It’s OUR COUNTRY. Of course we should be allowed to wear the flag of our own nation.

  3. Ed says:

Now we can. We changed the world right here on the Ed Gruberman Blog.

I don’t feel strongly about people wearing the American flags, however it should be pointed out that wearing of the American Flag is widely consider disrespectful and is specifically prohibited under the U.S. Flag code (see http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html).

Think about it this way: The V.A. members who came out and performed the flag ceremony would be offended to see someone wearing the American flag. There are dozens of things you’re not supposed to do with the flag and wearing it is one of them.

  5. Ed says:

Gaydor, the US Code you reference speaks on using the actual flag as “wearing apparel” i.e. cutting the flag to make a patch or garment, not a t-shirt with a picture of a properly oriented flag.

  6. Gedor says:

    That’s not true.

Title 4 defines the United States “Flag” as:

“The flag of the United States shall be thirteen horizontal stripes, alternate red and white; and the union of the flag shall be forty-eight stars, white in a blue field. ”

The medium on which the flag resides is not part of the definition. For example, the “flag” you see painted on the side of Air Force One is considered an American Flag.

The rules specified by the flag code apply to any flag that meets the above description, unless otherwise specified.

Personally, I don’t mind seeing people wear the stars and stripes. I have, however, met members of our military who feel strongly about it. It’s particularly true in the older crowd.

Because of this, I wasn’t too surprised to see that a public school would create a rule about wearing the flag given the existence of the federal code.

  7. Ed says:

I agree that treating the flag correctly is important. But there are lots of “laws” out there that are outdated and not used. Here is an example…

    Rehoboth Beach, Deleware…

On Halloween, children may only “trick-or-treat” from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and if Halloween falls on a Sunday, they must “trick-or-treat” on October 30 during this same time interval.

198-33. Halloween regulations; exceptions. [Amended 10-14-1977 by Ord. No. 1077-2; 10-11-1991 by Ord. No. 1091-1]

A.No person shall permit his child or any child under his control to go about the streets, ways and/or sidewalks within the corporate limits of the City of Rehoboth Beach for the purpose of causing mischief of any sort; provided, however, that children who have not attained the age of 14 years may go upon the streets, ways and/or sidewalks from door to door or house to house for treats between the hours of 6:00 p.m., prevailing time, and 8:00 p.m., prevailing time, on October 31 of any year; provided, however, that if October 31 shall be a Sunday, such going from door to door and house to house for treats shall take place on the evening of October 30 between the hours of 6:00 p.m., prevailing time, and 8:00 p.m., prevailing time.
